BREAKING NEWS: The Post Office moves to 1830 14th Street
Picture
The U.S. Post Office at the Reeves Center is moving to 1830 14th Street which is where the falafel eatery was previously located.   You can see the signage going up in the photo.

The post office was originally located at 1407 T Street before the building was redeveloped and where the Taqueria Nacional and Butter Me Up restaurants occupied the space.  The post office was moved to a low rise building on 14th Street that was subsequently redeveloped as the Harper apartment building.  The post office then moved to the Reeves Center after the community lobbied the Postmaster General for it to remain in the neighborhood.  There had been some talk about closing it down altogether but future development plans indicated that the growing population around the 14th and U corner would support the post office.

We are pleased that the post office will still be in our neighborhood!  It is scheduled to open next month...

Taco Bell returns to 14th and U

Picture
Taco Bell used to be in our neighborhood and now it is coming back!  It used to be located in the Louis apartment building's footprint prior to its construction near what is now the loading dock for Trader Joe's.  We are looking forward to another reasonably priced food venue in our neighborhood.

They will take the place of DC Noodles at the corner of 14th and U near 90 Second Pizza.

Butter Me Up closes and plans to move

Butter Me Up at 1407 T St has announced that it will be leaving our neighborhood after operating there since 2022 and will be moving to a new location.   No reason has been given by the owner of the restaurant.  BMU occupied the former location of Taqueria Nacional in the Old Post Office.  It will now be available for leasing by a new business and we look forward to seeing who will occupy the space.  We wish BMU good luck in their new location!

Compass Coffee replaces Wydown Coffee in the Louis apartment building after Wydown closed suddenly.  The closure occurred when employees planned to unionize their two stores.   The union, Wydown Workers United, formed in April to address employee concerns about cafe operations including staffing, equipment function and compensation.

Good luck to Compass!

Capital Pride arrives Saturday June 8

Capital Pride Parade arrives Saturday June 8 and travels down 14th Street to Pennsylvania Avenue.  This is a change of route for the parade as organizers prepare for World Pride 2025 which is expected to bring in millions of visitors to DC .   The parade will no longer turn on P Street and head into the Dupont Circle neighborhood--see the map below.

This ignores the history of the parade in the Gay Community.  The route in the past started on P Street and 22nd Street west of Dupont Circle and traveled along 17th and 14th Streets.  Two years ago the parade direction was reversed and it now starts at 14th and S Streets.  Read more about the parade's history here.

Enjoy the parade everyone!

Picture
A new eatery has opened in the former home of the Taqueria Nacional in the Post Office building on T Street.  The Butter Me Up menu is divided into four categories: breakfast sammies, superfood acai bowls, toasts, and sides.  See their menu here.  Patrons will be able to quench their thirst with house-pressed juices, smoothies, as well as tea, lemonade and single-origin, farm-to-cup coffee.  Traditional brunch cocktails are also available.

We welcome this establishment to our very diverse neighborhood and wish their patrons many happy meals!

Mi Vida and Aslin Beer Company open on 14th

The Aslin Beer Company opened its 14th Street location over the Labor Day weekend after months of construction. The new 211 seat indoor/outdoor beer garden serves 21 Aslin draft beers including fan favorites and new releases, as well as two rotating taps of guest beers from around the country.   During the day they offer coffee!  There is also a food truck for the hungry!

DC Council Leaves 14th and U Ward Boundaries "as is"
After hearing testimony from affected residents, the Redistricting Subcommittee recommended that the DC Council leave our SW corner of 14th and U Streets as it has been for the past 20 years.  ANC 2B which represents the SW corner also testified to keep the current ward boundaries.  To read their letter to the subcommittee and the Council click here.  The DC Council voted to keep our SW corner in Ward 2.

CM Nadeau wanted to "reunite" the SW corner back into Ward 1, but several hundred residents that live in the SW corner of 14th and U signed petitions to stay in Ward 2.  Our SW corner was redistricted from Ward 1 to Ward 2 after the 2000 Census.

We are pleased with this outcome as we are a neighborhood that values our cohesiveness and cooperation in all matters that affect us.  We have been very successful in preserving our historic neighborhood and promoting diversity while encouraging new businesses to move here.

Lupo Pizzeria opens next door to BRESCA on 14th Street.  Owner Med Lahlou who also owns Lupo Verde at the corner has opened his new pizzeria.  We welcome this new business to our neighborhood...MANGIA!

Taqueria Nacional joins Matchbox in closing due to pandemic
Picture
The owners of Taqueria Nacional  located in the Old Post Office building at 14th and T have decided to close the restaurant due to losing customers during the pandemic.  They will keep their other location in Mt. Pleasant.  We are very sorry to see this business close...it was a great gathering place in our neighborhood where we could have conversations and be heard while enjoying the good food prepared by Chef Ann Cashion.  So many places along the corridor were crowded and noisy.

Matchbox Restaurant Closes Due to Pandemic

The Matchbox Restaurant at 14th and T has closed its doors permanently due to the pandemic.  The Matchbox Restaurant Group filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization in August, and was acquired by Reston, Virginia-based Thompson Hospitality.  “Restructuring will allow us to right-size our balance sheet and position the business for growth going forward,” said Edwin Sheridan IV, a member of the Matchbox Food Group board of directors, at the time of the Chapter 11 filing.

The 14th Street location, at 1901 14th St. NW, opened in 2012. The original opened in D.C.’s Chinatown in 2003.  Matchbox partnered with Thompson Hospitality two years ago to manage its restaurants and develop new ones. Thompson Hospitality is the fifth-largest restaurant group in the D.C. area.

We are very sad to see this anchor restaurant close its doors.

Picture

Protesters gathered many times during the past few month to walk down 14th Street toward the White House to protest police brutality against people of color.  Black Lives Matter supporters of every color and persuasion demonstrated in DC.  Our diverse neighborhood showed its support by joining the marchers.  Some put up signs in their windows and many cheered them on from their front yards.  The senseless shootings by police have continued....now it is Jacob Blake in Wisconsin.

Coronavirus Closes 14th and U Corridor

Picture
Picture
The coronavirus pandemic has hit our neighborhood in a major way, closing our businesses and the Reeves government center.

Restaurants like BRESCA are closed and customers have to line up outside Trader Joe's (pictured below) which is open as an essential business.  The new Sephora shop is boarded up as well as other retailers like J. Crew and West Elm.

The mayor has extended the stay at home order until May 15 and the number of cases in the DMV have not peaked yet.

Our neighborhood remains very quiet when it is usually quite busy with lots of foot traffic.  It is like being in the Twilight Zone.

Amazon GO  coming to the Liz

Picture
Amazon has signed a lease for 4,000 sq ft of space in The Liz.  The store will let customers purchase items through an app rather than wait in line for a cashier.  There are 16 such stores in the country with 2 more slated to open in Chicago.  The store pictured above is in Seattle.  We are looking forward to shopping at this new store!

New Murals Appear in Uptown Arts District

Picture
Picture
New murals have been appearing in our neighborhood, otherwise known as the Uptown Arts District.  At 14th and S we have another mural entitled "There's No Place Like Home," and the Notorious RBG makes an appearance at 15th and U.  We are pleased to see these new murals...hope you are enjoying them as well.

Masa 14 and Meatball Shop Close

Picture
Masa 14 has closed its doors after 10 years.  The ownership of the latin-asian fusion restaurant want to focus their attention on their other locations including El Centro, the taqueria next door.  The owners of the Meatball Shop closed their new 14th Street location due to "some challenges beyond our control."

An Atlanta-based Spanish restaurant named Gypsy Kitchen will occupy the space vacated by Masa 14.  We look forward to the new eatery.

Home Rule Closes After 20 Years!

Picture
Home Rule is closing this weekend after 20 years of operating in our neighborhood!  We thank the owners for taking a chance on us and succeeding when the odds were stacked against them.  They were the only bright retail spot in a boarded up area.  Now we are thriving and we have diverse retail.  Again thanks to these urban pioneers and we wish you good luck in your next endeavors!

50 years ago riots erupted at 14th and U

Picture
Picture
Today  we remember the riots that filled the 14th and U community with fires and smoke after the killing of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.  According to published reports, several hundred stores were damaged or destroyed, looting was widespread, and 12 people died.  Troops patrolled the area as documented in photos shown here. Other parts of the city also experienced rioting, including Columbia Heights, H Street and 7th Street.

Pictured above (courtesy of the DC Public Library) are the NW corner of 14th and U (on the top) where the Reeves Center building now sits.  It opened in September of 1986 and has served as a magnet for redevelopment of the area. The other photo is the corner of 14th and S looking northward.  The Black Cat nightclub now occupies the building shown on the far right side of the photo.

Capital One coming to 14th and U corner

Picture
Rumors abound that a bank is coming to the SE corner of 14th and U.  So we checked with DCRA and learned that Capital One Bank applied for permits to renovate the space formerly occupied by Cricket.   They will join Wells Fargo, BB&T, Sun Trust, and Bank of America with locations in the 14th and U area. Originally, only the historic Industrial Bank served our neighborhood with 2 locations...one in the Reeves Center and the other at the corner of 11th and U.

ABC Board Rules on DACHA Beer Garden Application

The ABC Board has issued a decision on Dacha’s 14th St. application. They reduced Dacha’s occupancy from its original request of 600 persons to 200 persons–a 2/3rds cut.

They also rolled back the requested hours of operation from 2 am to 1:30 am on Sunday through Thursday nights and from 3 am to 2:30 am on Friday and Saturday nights..

They limited the outdoor cafe hours to 11 pm and 12 midnight respectively.  The ruling also limits the seating in the outdoor cafe area to 150 and stipulated that it would count toward the 200 person cap.

UPDATE:  The board has also rejected recently a subsequent request by the applicants to add 50 more persons to their capacity (this request was made after they learned of the reduction to 200 persons).

Pictured below is the revised plan submitted by the applicants for review by the community:

Welcome to the renovated Garrison School

Picture
Garrison School hosted its Grand Re-Opening this week and I was pleased to attend to see the renovations and plans (shown below) for the areas in the rear of the building.  I was serving on the ANC when we wrote letters to the DC Council to speed up the funding of the renovations when it looked like they were dragging their feet.  Then I served on the DCCA Board of Directors and we wrote letters asking for the same speedup in spending.   Clearly, there is a lot of community support for this project since we have seen an increase in the number of families in our neighborhood.

Congratulations to all who made the improvements possible for our own neighborhood school!

The capacity is estimated to be 600 people occupying the indoor and outdoor spaces, including use of the public space along S St.  It is located across the street from another beer garden, Garden District.  Residents have posted "No Dacha" signs in their front yards to register their protest.  They plan to file a formal ;protest soon.  Two civic associations, the Dupont Circle Citizens Association and the Shaw Dupont Citizens Alliance, are planning to protest the application.

If you have not noticed, Bakehouse has left the neighborhood and its space is now occupied by Jubilee Ice Cream.  Visit their website for more info on their flavor offerings (such as coconut lychee lime and honey lemon lavender) at www.icecreamjubilee.com.

Picture
District Distilling Company has opened at 1414 U Street in the spaces formerly occupied by Coppi's and Utopia.  I attended the opening and sampled the suckling pig dish along with their pecan pie dessert.  Delicious!  There is a distillery downstairs that will brew gin and vodka and the restaurant and bar are located upstairs. The space is minimal--stripped down to the brick walls and wooden floors and the lighting is bare bulbs so don't expect a lot of ambience.  They serve a number of signature cocktails and they have a retail store to sell their spirits to the public.

Picture

Universal Gear Closing its doors

Picture
Universal Gear is closing its doors according to owner David Franco who said recently that the retail world is challenging and he wants to move on to pursue other things.  He is currently developing several properties in DC and NYC.  We will miss this wonderful shop at the corner of 14th and Wallach Place!

Bohemian Caverns Closes Its Doors

Picture
Various sources are reporting that this jazz venue has closed its doors forever.  The current owners have not renewed their lease and have cited a dwindling number of customers due to the proliferation of clubs and restaurants in the 14th and U corridor.  There are simply too many choices say the owners.  Many jazz greats have performed there including Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington, Ramsey Lewis, Satchmo, Miles Davis and Shirley Horn.  We will miss this very important part of Black Broadway!

Street Sweeping Begins March 1

The annual rite of spring begins on March 1 with DPW sweeping the streets so please remember to obey the signs and move your vehicles accordingly.  Hopefully none of our neighbors will be ticketed!

Love is in the Air at 14th and T

Picture
Lupo Verde is celebrating Valentine's Day by decorating its exterior facade with hearts and best wishes for love.  One valentine caught my eye:  Love is the irresistible desire to be desired irresistibly.  Take your loved ones out to brunch or dinner tonight!

U Street Cafe Closes Due to Lack of Customers

Picture
Another establishment closes on U Street...The U Street Cafe.  This was always one of my favorite places to get coffee and have a conversation with neighbors.  Their lunches and brunches were great but there has not been enough daytime traffic and customers to sustain the cafe.  This continues to be an issue for our 14th and U neighborhood businesses as several operators/owners of local eateries have told me that they are worried about the lack of daytime customers.  They state that they are busy on the weekends but this is apparently not enough to be successful.

Cakelove Closes its Doors on U Street

Picture
Cakelove closes its doors after many years in our neighborhood.  The owner, Warren Brown, has announced that he will be consolidating his bakery operations into a warehouse in Alexandria.  His sales will come from doing most of his business online and in selected small boutique cafes in the region.  We will miss the great cakes and cupcakes!!

Elysium Fourteen Under Construction

The Elysium Fourteen project at the corner of 14th and Wallach Place is coming along.  It was approved a few years ago and it will contain 56 luxury rental apartments with retail on the ground floor.  The developer, Madison Investments, is going to restore the historic corner building that long housed a beauty salon.  Rumors have it that Urban Outfitters is opening a store there.  Looking forward to more changes in our urban landscape!

The Portner Place redevelopment project is about to break ground on U Street between 14th and 15th Street.  The project will occur in two parts...first the part facing U Street (set to open in late 2016) and the second the part facing V Street (set to open in late 2018).  The U Street building will be 11 stories high and will have 250 to 270 market-rate units (mostly one- and two-bedroom apartments). There will be retail, possibly a restaurant, on the ground floor.  The project is slated to provide an additional 50 units of affordable housing to the original buildings (that contained 48 affordable units) that will soon be demolished.  The affordable units will be located in the V Street building.
